The New RTM Codes Are Live: What They Mean and How to Make the Most of Them in 2026

Remote Therapeutic Monitoring (RTM) just got more flexible. As of January 1, 2026, two new RTM codes are officially in effect — giving clinicians more ways to get reimbursed for the care they’re already providing.

If you're using OneStep to collect meaningful data from patients in real life, these changes matter. Here's what’s new, why it’s important, and how OneStep can help.

What’s New in 2026

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) introduced two new RTM codes that expand how and when providers can bill for remote monitoring and patient engagement. The goal is simple: make reimbursement more accessible for those patients with shorter term needs and reduced levels of engagement.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

98985

This code allows reimbursement when a patient provides 2 to 15 days of data within a 30 day cycle.

  • Reimburses approximately $40 per month
  • OneStep captures these data passively via gait recordings, background walking, ROM, assessments, and more

98979

This code reimburses for 10 to 19 minutes of clinician time spent reviewing RTM data and completing one interactive communication (like a call, video, or secure message).

  • Reimburses approximately $26 per month
  • A new option for occurrences below the previous 20-minute requirement (code 98980)
  • Supports billing for shorter but meaningful interactions and data reviews
  • Covers data analysis, treatment planning, documentation, and communication with the patient or caregiver

Together, these new codes provide additional opportunities for more frequent, accurate, and realistic reimbursements for the care you are providing.
